Wanted: articles about digital gaming and science learning

The journal Cultural Studies of Science Education is planning an issue about Digital Games and Learning in Science: A Sociocultural Perspective, projected for 2012. Issue editor Catherine Milne of New York University is seeking articles. Titles and abstracts are due by August 1 and final manuscripts will be due in January 2011. The journal sends articles to reviewers who write responses and raise additional issues, and Dr. Milne is also interested in hearing from those interested in serving as reviewers.

Articles can address "a range of issues associated with digital games and simulations and learning science." Examples suggested by the editor include

  • The history of play and games and relationship to science education
  • The culture of games
  • Sociocultural theory as a framework for understanding engagement and game play
  • Youth identity associated with playing games and being learners
  • The tension between children's expectations for games, they should be fun, and their understanding of learning in schools
  • The design elements that should be incorporated into games that have learning as a goal
  • The 'digital divide.'
