Volcanoes of the Deep Sea – Reformatted for free distribution

The award-winning IMAX film Volcanoes of the Deep Sea is now available in Blu-ray format to bring the giant screen experience to theaters in museums, science centers, planetariums and other venues, without IMAX projection systems. With funding from NSF and corporate sponsorship, the 2003 film is being reformatted and made available for free distributions. There will be no cost for the film and no licensing fees will be charged.

Volcanoes of the Deep Sea follows the voyages of Alvin, a three-person research submarine, as scientists explore an erupting volcanic rift and the exotic life forms that live two miles below the ocean surface. A companion teacher’s guide can be downloaded to supplement the educational experience of the film with hands-on learning and discovery experiences.

For additional information, contact the film’s science director, Dr. Richard A. Lutz of the Center for Deep-Sea Ecology and Biotechnology, Rutgers University at rlutz@marine.rutgers.edu.
