Connecting Citizen Scientists and Building Bird Habitat One Yard at a Time

The YardMap Network: Social Networking for Community Science

March 02, 2010 by Janis Dickinson

User-friendly citizen science is the name of the game here. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is working to develop the first data-rich visual/spatial web application for Citizen Science. The YardMap targets backyards and other greenspaces and asks people to map habitat-type and other landscape practices all while connecting users through rich social networking tools. The result? Data that gets scientists places they’ve never been before, and a tool that gets learners thinking in complex ways about the ecology of their backyards!
