Cyberchase, the informal mathematics project on PBSKIDS GO!, recently completed a study, Children’s Learning from Multiple Media in Informal Mathematics Education. The study used Cyberchase to investigate how multiple media components (TV, Web and hands-on activities) interact to yield cumulative educational outcomes. Early analysis of data shows significant impact on both the process of children’s mathematical problem solving and the sophistication of their solutions when they engaged with TV plus online games – more so than of either medium alone. This suggests the lessons learned from one medium can be applied while learning from a second medium. Full report to be released this spring.
