People Making Things

Garage Workshop @ Children's Museum of Pittsburgh

March 04, 2010 by James Bell

At the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, kids and families build simple projects, solving design problems and learning about phenomena and systems along the way. Facilitators present models for observation, imitation and inspiration for innovative variations. They then ask questions and encourage multiple paths of investigation, the materials at hand being the only constraint. The environment is designed to invite children to practice science, engineering and art-making process skills, while learning values like perseverance and respect for evidence in trial and error. This work laid the foundation for the museum’s NSF-funded “How People Make Things” exhibition currently traveling North America.
